Workshop: Consumers, Transparency, and the Open Internet

January 19, 2010 1:30 PM ET
Room TW-C305 (Commission Meeting Room) FCC, 445 12th Street SW, Washington, DC

Coordinator info: Rebecca Hirselj (202) 418-7603 Rebecca.Hirselj@fcc.gov

The Internet empowers individuals to communicate, find information, and buy and sell products and services in ways that were hard to imagine even a decade ago. This workshop will explore consumer choice and user control of the online experience, and the importance of transparency for those interests. Workshop participants will discuss what consumers, technology developers, and content and application providers currently know and don’t know about broadband service, including broadband providers’ network management practices. The workshop will also address the effect that greater transparency could have on the Internet ecosystem and how disclosures could best be presented to Internet-based businesses small and large, innovators, and consumers. Finally, panelists will examine whether there are current examples of disclosures that could serve as useful models and how such information can be most efficiently produced and distributed.
